O my maraca! This sugar-free marg will make you want to fiesta. With this recipe in your repertoire you can celebrate Cinco de Mayo sans the sugar – can I get an Olé?!
I’ve maintained a low sugar lifestyle for a little over a year, and there is no turning back. I absolutely love this way of living and eating. The fun part is that the most tantalizing treats (like margaritas!) can be reinvented the sugar-free way with a little research and a lot of creativity.
So what makes this margarita such a sugar-free superstar?
#1. Orange Extract
You know that hint of orange deliciousness that you taste in your fav margarita? That, my friend, is Triple Sec Liqueur. It has almost 11 grams of sugar per 1 ounce and 5 carbs per individual tablespoon. (Yikes!)
Triple Sec is NO BUENO. So what is a girl to do?
Orange extract is your rescue! It has ZERO grams of sugar & ZERO carbs (yes, you heard that right!). A tiny splash of orange extract is all that you will need to add that little orange zing to your margarita. Please please please don’t measure it out like Triple Sec though, because the orange extract packs a much more powerful punch.
#2. Liquid Stevia
More like liquid gold… this little bottle has saved me lots of calories and lots of carbs. It makes anything delightfully sweet without the chemicals of artificial sweeteners and without the carbohydrates of sugar.
A bottle of this stuff is always in my bag. I even break it out at restaurants to add sweetness to drinks that I order sans sugar. My hubby Tom finds this slightly embarrassing because he thinks the bottle looks like a weird potion, but I have assured him that it’s worth it!
The Whole Enchilada
The orange extract and the liquid stevia are my sugar-free marg secret weapons. The remaining ingredients are margarita essentials no matter what the sugar content.
Here are ALL of the ingredients to make this skinny marg come to life!
(I wing the measurements every time… so please make it to your liking)
- 100% Blue Agave Tequila (be stingy or liberal – that is up to you!)
- Fresh Limes (or Lime Juice not from concentrate)
- Fresh Lemons (or Lemon Juice not from concentrate)
- Liquid Stevia (Start with a little and work your way up to the right amount of sweetness.)
- Orange Extract (just a splash!)
- Water (If you don’t like it really tart- just add a splash)
- Salt (Optional)
Once you mix up these ingredients to your liking, you will be hooked! There is no reason to sip sugary libations when you can enjoy this refreshing cocktail without the worry of carbs and cals!
